Do Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' latest Mike McCarthy comments hint at 2025 reunion?

What seemed like a clear-cut situation for the Dallas Cowboys may be muddied by a late-season surge.

As the Cowboys fell to 2-7 and dashed any hopes of a playoff berth earlier this season, the writing seemed to be on the wall for head coach Mike McCarthy. But now that Dallas has won five of its last six, perhaps McCarthy could get a reprieve.

Cowboys president and general manager Jerry Jones is one of the most vocal owners in all of professional sports, and one of the few owners who wields the power to fire his head coach. Will he exercise that power on McCarthy after all?

During his weekly guest appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones seemed to hint that McCarthy might be back for another season in Dallas, thanks in part to the success he's had of late with backup quarterback Cooper Rush forced into action.

"All I can say is what a good job, how good a job he's doing," Jones said of McCarthy. "Don't have thoughts that I would share as to anything about what we do ... after we're through playing this year."

"I can't tell you how proud I am of the way the coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, the way that the leadership on this team, and really proud of these young players. They just are growing mentally and physically by leaps and bounds, makes me think we've got and outstanding future ahead of us."

McCarthy has been with the Cowboys for five seasons now, and his tenure has largely been marked by regular-season success and playoff disappointment.

Dallas made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, including two NFC East titles, but has only one win to show for that effort. If McCarthy does get one more shot in 2025, one would think a playoff win would be the minimum required to keep the gig moving forward.
