Disney World guests stranded on monorail after lightning strike halts rail system

A dream vacation to Disney World didn’t go as planned in Florida when a monorail full of passengers became stuck after a lightning strike fried the system.

A weekend of severe storms affected the magical kingdom of Disney World, leaving passengers stranded on a monorail after a lightning strike shut down the electrical system, according to passengers.

The severe weather event derailed visitors’ plans at the park, leaving them trapped for an hour and a half, passengers said.

This comes as the Sunshine State experienced a weekend of wet weather and thunderstorms, with more on the way all week long.

While trapped, passengers tried to open the windows as hot, humid conditions made things increasingly uncomfortable during the frustrating and scary situation.

“We were there for one and a half hours and during that time, the driver talked us through how to take out the window,” Tanya Lee told Storyful News.

Eventually, authorities restored power and towed the train to the nearest station, where passengers could safely exit.

The catastrophic event comes after the Sunshine State experienced rain and thunderstorms all weekend. The Washington Post via Getty Images

“Everyone was in good spirits, as there is not much you can do at that point,” Lee said.

According to Storyful News, Disney guest relations offered the affected passengers $50 gift cards and a Lightning Lane pass to zoom through long lines.
