The initial point of streaming exclusives was for movies and shows to be exactly that — exclusive to the streaming services that released them. That has changed as these streaming libraries get deeper, and it feels like the companies behind those streamers are using their original titles as a way to gain new subscribers via rival services. This month, one of the more popular TV originals from Disney+ popped up on the Mouse House's biggest streaming rival, Netflix, for a limited time.
With Percy Jackson and the Olympians slated to debut its third season next month, it looks like Disney is using Netflix to try and get some more eyes on the hit series. The first two seasons of the acclaimed Rick Riordan adaptation have been added to Netflix's lineup, bringing the show to its biggest audience ever — and the plan seems to be working out just fine.
'Percy Jackson' Has Been Big on Netflix
Ever since being added to Netflix's lineup, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been a pretty substantial hit on the service. The fantasy series has been a steady presence in the Netflix Top 10 TV Shows list over the last week. It has taken up various spots on the list on different days, and Friday's edition of the daily rotating lineup sees Percy Jackson occupying the 10th and final spot.
While that means Percy Jackson may not be the outright biggest show on Netflix right now (that honor belongs to new series Below), hanging onto any spot in the Top 10 TV lineup shows that it has staying power with the Netflix audience. It likely also means that viewers are watching through a lot of episodes, since there hasn't been much of a drop-off day-to-day. That bodes well for Disney+, as the arrival of the third season could compel anyone who watched through the first two installments on Netflix to sign up for a new subscription.
It's also worth noting that Percy Jackson and the Olympians isn't the only original from a streaming rival currently occupying space on the Netflix charts. Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ hit Mayor of Kingstown, which stars Jeremy Renner, is currently fifth on the Netflix Top 10 TV Shows list. Unlike Percy Jackson, though, Mayor of Kingstown doesn't carry the "Watch for a Limited Time" message, indicating that it could be available on Netflix for quite a while.
'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Returning for Season 3
It has been around a year-and-a-half since fans of Percy Jackson received the good news that the show was getting a third season. The news came ahead of the Season 2 premiere, and we're finally ready to see that long-awaited third installment land on the screen. The Season 3 premiere is set to be released on November 20th, which likely means that the first two seasons will be pulled from Netflix sometime next month.
The third season of Disney's Percy Jackson series is an especially exciting one for fans, as it takes the screen adaptations into uncharted territory. The first two seasons of the show followed the stories of the first two books in Riordan's series: The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. Those two books were previously adapted into feature films in 2010 and 2013, respectively. The third season of the series is adapting the third book, The Titan's Curse, marking the first time that story will be brought to the screen.
