Dillon Gabriel's edge over Shedeur Sanders as the next Browns starting QB has been obvious since the NFL draft.
Browns reporter Tony Grossi's inside scoop from the rookie minicamp confirmed that idea.
"I thought, both days, Dillon Gabriel looked a little bit better," Grossi insinuated. "Dillon Gabriel's mechanics are pretty good. He throws a tight spiral. He throws a beautiful ball, he's very assertive, he knows the pocket. You could tell that even though they're not rushing. He just has a pocket presence."
That said, neither of them has played with the team veterans yet.
How they perform alongside the veterans will have a massive say in their QB1 likes.
"Right now, all we're seeing is mechanics. They're not playing against defenses," Grossi further emphasized, hinting that Sanders still has a chance to win over the team.
The Athletic's Zac Jackson countered the argument by picking Sanders' performance as the better in the rookie minicamp.
"In just throwing the ball? It's not close, Shedeur Sanders ... it's not close, no. I'm impressed with the way Shedeur threw the ball, like it jumps off his hands. This is what an NFL quarterback's supposed to look like," Jackson said.
"But let me counter that by saying this is a rookie minicamp. No pads, no full-speed competition, nobody's coming to know your head off."
Jackson emphasized that head coach Kevin Stefanski, OC Tommy Rees, and QB coach Bill Musgrave were "never further than a few feet away" from the young QBs and that they were evaluating them on how well can they "take the play call, command the huddle [and] get everyone lined up."
As far as the opinion goes, both Sanders and Gabriel are giving each other quite the competition.
We'll see how this storyline plays out as the rookie minicamp progresses.
