Walter Clayton Jr. has starred for Florida in March Madness, but he easily could be playing a different sport right now.
Clayton was a standout football player at Lake Wales High School in Lake Wales, Florida, handling both safety and wide receiver. At the end of his sophomore year, he was a four-star recruit with offers from major programs like Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Notre Dame.
Between his sophomore and junior years of high school, however, Clayton decided he wanted to pursue basketball over football at the college level. He's had a winding road as a hooper, as his senior season was altered by the COVID pandemic. Clayton was lightly recruited coming out of high school and had to establish himself at Iona in New York, more than 1,000 miles from his hometown.

Lucky for Todd Golden and the Gators, Clayton transferred to Florida before his junior season and now finds himself on the college basketball's biggest stage. His athleticism and poise in the big moments can be attributed, at least in part, to his time on the gridiron.
