Just ahead of the 2022 season, the Denver Broncos made what was, at the time, one of the biggest trades in NFL history by acquiring Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks.
The Broncos figured they had answered their biggest question and found their future franchise quarterback. Wilson was wildly successful in Seattle, including a win in the Super Bowl over the Broncos. He was well on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That is why it is shocking that just four years later, Wilson is retiring from the game of football, having played for two other teams after leaving Denver.
Wilson spent two forgettable seasons as the Broncos' starting quarterback, finishing his tenure with the team on the bench after refusing to change some of the terms in his contract, which would have prevented the Broncos from having to pay him guaranteed money should he be injured.
Wilson spent one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and one with the New York Giants before deciding to call it a career on Wednesday. Now set to join CBS as an analyst, is Wilson still a Hall-of-Fame caliber player?
Does Russell Wilson belong in the Hall of Fame?
This is an interesting debate.
Had Wilson's career ended after the 2021 season and he played with only Seattle, there's a chance he gets into the Hall of Fame based on his accolades. He won the 2012 Rookie of the Year and was the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2020. He would have also won back-to-back Super Bowls in 2013 and 2014 if not for a historically bad call in Super Bowl XLIX. There are only nine quarterbacks who have ever won back-to-back Super Bowls and eight of them are in the Hall of Fame. The other is Patrick Mahomes, who will be. Wilson was feet away from joining that list.
But the years that followed in Denver, Pittsburgh and New York showed a player who looked to be a shell of his former self. Was he just protected better in Seattle and made to look much better than he actually was? That's a fair question to ask.
Russell Wilson career statistics
| Statistic | Career Total | Rank in NFL history |
| Passing Yards | 46,966 | 16th |
| Passing Touchdowns | 353 | 12th |
| QB Rating | 99.3 | 5th |
| Wins | 121 | 12th |
Russell Wilson statistics (2022-2025)
| Games Played | Completion Percentage | Passing Yards | TD Passes | Interceptions | QB Rating | Win-Loss Record |
| 47 | 62.9 | 9,907 | 61 | 27 | 90.9 | 17-27 |
Wilson's numbers were definitely better in Seattle, as was his success rate in winning games, but he didn't play bad football the rest of the way. By the time he reached New York, he was relegated to backup status, but he took the Steelers to the playoffs in 2024.
Now retired, Wilson will have to wait the mandatory five years before he can be considered eligible for the Hall of Fame. What will get in the way of Wilson's chances are all of the quarterbacks who will be considered for entry at the same time.
Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger are already on the list. Philip Rivers, who set his five-year clock back last season after returning to play for the Indianapolis Colts, has an argument to be enshrined. Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers — two quarterbacks who could each be playing their final season in 2026 — will be ahead of Wilson in getting in. Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has an argument as well.
This isn't like Tom Brady or Drew Brees hanging on too long. Both of them had ironclad resumes before their career ended. In the case of Wilson, he had a glowing career with the Seahawks, but seemingly took several steps backwards the moment he left. If he was on the fringe of getting in before the trade to Denver, where is he now?

This could be one of the more interesting debates for the Hall of Fame in league history. One thing seems certain: even if Wilson does get in, it's going to take quite some time.
