Dick Vitale blasts WNBA players for 'pure jealousy' in Caitlin Clark voting snub

The WNBA season is in full swing, with the All-Star Game just a couple of weeks away. Fans have missed seeing Caitlin Clark in action at times this season due to injuries. However, the former Iowa Hawkeye continues to make a significant impact every time she steps on the court.

Despite dealing with some injuries, Clark is having a strong second year with the Indiana Fever. When she's playing, she contributes at a high level and remains a key factor in her team’s performance.

“Clark averages 18.2 points, 8.9 assists and five rebounds per game this season. She missed several weeks of action earlier this season following a quad strain and has been battling a recent groin injury that has made her questionable ahead of Tuesday's Commissioner's Cup Final against the Minnesota Lynx,” CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford wrote.

Recently, Clark was voted an All-Star captain by the fans—earning the most votes in WNBA history. However, her fellow players didn't share the same enthusiasm, ranking her as the ninth-best guard.

“While Clark finished first in fan voting and third in media voting, she was a stunning ninth in player voting. In fact, Clark wasn't even the highest ranked Fever guard among the player vote,” CBS Sports’ Jack Maloney wrote.

ESPN commentator Dick Vitale didn’t hold back his opinion. He criticized the players for what he sees as jealousy over Clark’s success.

“Absolutely PURE JEALOUSY that ⁦WNBA⁩ players voted Caitlin Clark the 9th best guard. Some day they will realize what she Has done for ALL of the players in the WNBA. Charted planes - increase in salaries - sold out crowds - improved TV Ratings,” Vitale wrote.

Vitale clearly believes Clark has changed the game beyond just her on-court performance. After a historic college career at Iowa, she has brought a new audience to the WNBA. While Clark is arguably one of the league’s most impactful players, her peers seem to believe she’s just barely worthy of a top-10 spot among guards.
