Diane Keaton’s friend is giving new insight into the Hollywood legend’s death.
After Keaton’s family revealed Wednesday that she died of pneumonia, her pal told TMZ that the “First Wives Club” actress was battling “an unnamed illness” before she passed on Oct. 11.
The friend added that Keaton’s death was “not a shock” to them.
Keaton’s family confirmed her cause of death to People on Wednesday.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” her loved ones shared.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” they added.
The Los Angeles Fire Department were called to Keaton’s Los Angeles home on the day of her death.
Audio revealed that the dispatcher said “person down” before stating Keaton’s address. The “Annie Hall” actress was reportedly removed from her home by ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital.
After her death, a friend of the Oscar winner claimed her health had “declined very suddenly” in the final months of her life.
“It was so unexpected,” the friend told People, “especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,” the pal added. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
Another friend of Keaton’s, Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, said Keaton “lost so much weight” before her death.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager, 81, told People on Sunday. “I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
Keaton previously survived two bouts with skin cancer and an eating disorder.
“It’s a family history,” she told the LA Times in 2015 about her cancer. “I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put the sunblock on.”
“Back in my 20s I didn’t pay attention much,” she added. “I didn’t research and didn’t really care and that was stupid because it’s dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn’t start sun care until my 40s.”
Keaton posted to her Instagram for the last time on April 11, sharing a photo with her Golden Retriever, Reggie, after having not been seen publicly in six month.
