The Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting to stay in the National League Wild Card hunt, but their series against the Boston Red Sox began on some horrible footing Monday night.
Ketel Marte, the veteran All-Star infielder, didn't show up to the game at Fenway Park, and the Diamondbacks placed him on the restricted list. There wasn't any indication of why he didn't show up, though he is having an MRI on his knee.
A few days later, and there's not any clearer answers. Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall told Bickley and Marotta's Mornings radio show for Arizona Sports that even he doesn't know why Marte didn't show up, as it's "still a complete mystery."

"Still a complete mystery. It's just bizarre," Hall said Thursday morning. "... hopefully we get some more answers today."
"Still a complete mystery. It’s just bizarre."
Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall tells @Bickley_Marotta the team still hasn’t learned the reason why Ketel Marte didn’t appear at Fenway Park on Monday.

This situation is, as Hall described it, bizarre. Marte didn't show up for Monday's game, despite arriving in Boston with the rest of the Diamondbacks players.
He's still away from the team, and there's a lot of uncertainty about his return, if there even will be one, this season.
Marte was in trade rumors over the offseason, and even leading up to the MLB trade deadline this year. But he wasn't moved. And now, a few weeks after the deadline, the D-Backs infielder was a no-show at a game.
The Diamondbacks still do not know the real reason why Marte didn't show up to the game, which is wild considering there have been multiple days for Marte to reveal the reason to the Diamondbacks.

It's not just the fans that are baffled by this situation; the D-Backs organization itself is also stunned by Marte's absence on Monday night, leading to his placement on the restricted list.
Arizona really could use him back in the lineup amid their postseason push, but there is way too much uncertainty to know what's really going on and whether he'll come back or not.
The fact that Hall is publicly stating the team doesn't know why Marte didn't show up is a bad sign for the two sides to work something out this season.
Will Marte play for the Diamondbacks again? It's a real question after this bizarre situation has unfolded, with Marte's future very much up in the air.
