Diamondbacks draft son of 2001 World Series hero

Arizona Diamondbacks will smile when they see the name of their newest draft pick.

In the 10th round of the 2025 MLB Draft, the Diamondbacks chose Brady Counsell, a shortstop out of the University of Kansas.

Yes, he's the son of Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

In Arizona, Counsell is remembered fondly for his 2001 postseason magic. He was the NLCS MVP (with a .381 average in that series). In World Series Game 7, Counsell was hit by a pitch from Mariano Rivera to load the bases and set up Luis Gonzalez's walk-off hit.

Brady is a solid ballplayer himself.

A 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior, Brady began his college career at Minnesota before ending it with the Jayhawks.

He hit .259 in his final college season while hitting 11 doubles and slugging 12 home runs.

At his size, Brady might end up at a different position than shortstop.

Diamondbacks won't mind a position change if Brady Counsell proves to be as clutch as his dad.
