The Arizona Diamondbacks missed the postseason after reaching the World Series in 2023. They could be losing a key player before they try to get back on track in 2025.
While listing the top 20 free agents and predicting where they would sign, FanSided's Nick Villano predicted that Christian Walker would leave the Diamondbacks and join the Yankees in free agency.
"The Yankees are uniquely equipped to sign Walker. They have DJ LeMahieu who is looking to bounce back, and they are looking to replace a washed Anthony Rizzo. Walker would just need to deliver on what he’s done in the past," wrote Villano. "With Aaron Judge in the lineup, along with whoever is added over the next few months, the Yankees can give Walker everything he’s looking for and more."
Walker leaving the Diamondbacks would be a big blow. He won his third career Gold Glove Award in 2024. More importantly, he accounted for 26 home runs and 84 RBIs last season in 130 games. The Diamondbacks star fills a huge need for the Yankees.
Spotrac projects Walker to sign a three-year, $66 million deal in free agency. Walker spent the early years of his career behind stars like Paul Goldschmidt. He is going to be 34 by the time opening day rolls around. However, he is the best first baseman available after New York Mets superstar Pete Alonso.
"Because of this journey, Walker is going to be 34 years old on Opening Day. A team would likely want to give a contract to someone in their mid-to-late 20s, but giving out three or four years to someone in their mid-30s is downright scary," wrote Villano. "However, that’s what it’s going to take, as Walker needs to cash out now on the heels of a great season."
