Devils' Jake Allen gets $10 million contract update before free agency

Jake Allen picked a great time to be a free agent.

The New Jersey Devils netminder is one of only a few potential starter-worthy goalies on the market. Because of that, Allen should get a nice payday, even possibly an overpay.

The Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco reports that Allen wants a multi-year deal at $5 million per year.

Earlier in the offseason, Allen was viewed more realistically as a $3.5 million AAV type of goalie.

But with no one for anyone to get, it makes sense that his value is boosting.

The Devils have been discussing an extension with Allen, per Di Marco, but if he wants that much money over multiple years, the Devils may have to move on and find someone else to back up Jacob Markstrom.

If the 34-year old Allen hits the open market, New Jersey would likely use Nico Daws as its backup.

Allen's current deal with the Devils pays him $3.85 million per year. It'd be a tough upgrade for New Jersey with limited cap space.

Earlier reports linked Allen to both the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers, both of whom definitely still need new goalie blood.

Allen could be that guy, for one of them, if they're willing to fork over $10 million.
