The Detroit Lions faced NFC North rivals the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon in the home opener. The Lions took care of business against the Bears and won by a final score of 52-21.
This was the first game that Ben Johnson returned to Detroit. Johnson was the Lions offensive coordinator for the last couple of seasons under Lions head coach Dan Campbell before Johnson left to be the Bears head coach. Quarterback Jared Goff had a big performance for the Lions by completing 23-of-28 passes for 334 yards and five touchdowns.
Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Did Not Like the Fans Chants Toward Ben Johnson
During the Bears and Lions game, Lions fans were chanting "F*** Ben Johnson." After the game, Goff was asked about he felt what the fans chanted toward Johnson. Goff said,
"I didn't like that. He did a lot for us. I don't know if he deserved that."
Johnson did help Detroit become one of the best offenses in the NFL. Goff learned a lot under him. Johnson and Goff were a perfect match for each other. The Bears head coach has to be wondering if he made a mistake leaving Goff and Detroit for Caleb Williams and Chicago.
This is also not the first time that Lions fans were ruthless and booing a former person with the organization. When Detroit played the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs two years ago, the Lions fans booed quarterback Matthew Stafford big time. Stafford no doubt is probably the best quarterback in Detroit franchise history and also a future hall of famer.
It is understandable why Goff was upset with the Lions fanbase for saying harsh things toward his former offensive coordinator. Detroit is off to a 1-1 start this season and Chicago is off to a 0-2 start. The Lions will next play against the Baltimore Ravens and the Bears will next play against the Dallas Cowboys.
