Derwin James Jr. gets honest as Chargers open season 0–2: ‘Right now that s—t looks trash’

The Los Angeles Chargers have looked like one of the worst teams in the NFL through two games.

Despite opening the 2026 season with two home games against teams that had three wins last year, the Chargers are winless with back-to-back 26–14 losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders. Veteran safety Derwin James Jr. was candid about the team’s latest loss to Sin City at SoFi Stadium.

“We got to look each other in the eye, man, and just tell the truth and just get better. Because right now that shit just looks trash,” James said. “I’m angry, but being angry don’t fix anything.“

James, who fractured his pinky against the Raiders and will play the rest of the season in a cast, appears to be just as frustrated as the fanbase with how the Chargers have begun the campaign. Sunday’s game was particularly disastrous for the offense, which had six fumbles against Las Vegas.

Justin Herbert has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns to kick off the year and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel who was envisioned to be the difference-maker for LA hasn’t been able to implement his explosive scheme for the Chargers.

The Chargers are the second team in NFL history to lose back-to-back games by double digits with both coming at home against teams that had a sub-200 win percentage the previous season, according to Opta Stats. The only other team to achieve this abysmal feat were the Racine Tornadoes in 1926.

The Chargers face an uphill battle with their next five games against much tougher opponents than the Cardinals and Raiders. In Week 3, the struggling squad will face a rested Buffalo Bills team on the road that has scored 77 points through the first two weeks of the season.
