(Bloomberg) — Denmark’s new government tapped Lars Lokke Rasmussen as foreign minister, retaining a key architect of Copenhagen’s response to US pressure over Greenland to steer the next phase of talks with Washington.

Rasmussen, leader of the centrist Moderates party, was reappointed to the role in Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s new center-left coalition government after playing a central role in talks with Washington over Greenland.

Frederiksen, who will serve a third term as premier, presented her ruling cabinet consisting of 21 ministers on Wednesday. It will see Peter Hummelgaard of her Social Democrat party becoming new finance minister, while Pia Olsen Dyhr, leader of the Green Left, becomes economy minister.

Frederiksen secured a breakthrough in coalition talks on Monday, 69 days after closely fought March elections, making the longest cabinet formation process in Danish history. The Social Democrats will govern alongside the Green Left, Social Liberals and the Moderates in a minority government, backed by left-wing parties.

Rasmussen, who served as foreign minister under Frederiksen’s previous cross-bloc government, was one of the architects of Denmark’s response to US President Donald Trump after his renewed push to acquire Greenland rattled relations between the allies. He played a key role in defusing tensions earlier this year, helping establish a working group with Washington to address the dispute.

He founded the Moderates party in 2021 after stepping down as leader of the Liberals, and served as Denmark’s prime minister from 2009 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2019.

The new Danish government will face the task of managing the next phase of negotiations. Despite months of discussions, the sides remain at odds over the US president’s wish to gain control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
