The Deadliest Catch family has said goodbye to one of their own.

Deckhand Todd Meadows, who had recently become a member of the crew, died on Feb. 25, Captain Rick Shelford confirmed. He was 25 years old.

Rick did not share a cause of death but called Todd’s passing “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady.”

“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family,” he wrote on Facebook March. 2. “His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away.”

“His smile was contagious,” Rick continued, “and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”

Rick, whose vessel is one of several followed by Deadliest Catch cameras, also wrote about Todd’s family and his children, saying that his love for them “was evident in everything he did.”

“He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him,” he added. “Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express.”

The captain emphasized that Todd would “forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood.”

“Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him,” Rick said. “Rest easy brother, till we meet again.”

Todd—who was father to three sons, according to a GoFundMe set up in his honor—was also remembered fondly by the mother of his children, Kennady Harvey.

“I don’t have words, nothing I do or say will bring you back,” she wrote on Facebook Feb. 26. “Not only were you my children’s father but you were my best friend.”

“You passed doing what you loved and that brings me a little bit of comfort knowing that,” Kennady added.I promise I will never let the boys forget you. We will talk about you everyday, visit you, show them every picture and video and all of our cool spots.”

Discovery Channel—who airs Deadliest Catch—also sent their condolences to Todd and those who knew him.

“This is a devastating loss,” a spokesperson for Discovery Channel told TMZ in a March 2 statement, “and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
