Davion Mitchell reveals how the Defensive Player of the Year award is motivating the Heat

For the 2026-27 NBA season, the Miami Heat are seen as one of the Eastern Conference's most formidable teams. With Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and Davion Mitchell, the Heat have top-tier defenders who will be tough to play against.

In fact, all these three players seem to be ready to play top-tier defense alongside their offensive contributions. Head coach Erik Spoelstra has always been a coach who focuses on the defensive details, but now, he has three players who are ready to make a bid for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

In the 2025-26 season, the Heat were only 13th in defensive rating at 114.5. However, that will massively improve in the 2026-27 season because of Giannis making the move to South Beach.

Getting one of the best players in the league on both ends of the floor is a massive addition for Miami. However, it also signals a shift in the Heat's mindset because they seem to be excited to play on both ends of the floor.

Mitchell himself has a reputation for being one of the toughest guard defenders in the league. In fact, he has been given the nickname "Off Night" because playing against him often leads to players struggling. Now, he wants to win the DPOY award, but he has some competition from his teammates.

"I know that they want to win Defensive Player of the Year too, just as much as I do. We have this competitive spirit... I’m not the only guy who can just guard. When you've got so many guys who are literally trying to win that DPOY award, your team's defense is just going to be amazing," Mitchell said about the Heat's defense on the Deuce & Mo Podcast.

That kind of motivation is a big deal for Miami. If they want to win games in the NBA, they should have a good defense. With that kind of mentality, they could pull off a fantastic season in the competitive Eastern Conference.
