Daryl Morey provides mysterious update on 76ers star Joel Embiid's health

So much is up in the air with Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers. He only appeared in 19 games before his season ended prematurely. That wasn’t a welcome development as the Sixers gave the former MVP another long and expensive extension just before the 2025 season started.

Sixers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey discussed Embiid during his appearance on Rights to Ricky Sanchez: A Sixers Podcast. Morey gave an honest, but not exactly encouraging, update on Embiid.

"Look, nobody knows what (Embiid’s) future will be,” Morey said. “We're optimistic, but nobody knows… We have a wide range of outcomes, we're optimistic, but part of sports is to not know. We are maybe the most unknown team in the NBA."

That is not exactly great news, and there has been a lot of ambiguity surrounding Embiid’s health dating back to the 2024 postseason. Embiid played hurt during that playoff run, then appeared in the 2024 Olympics playing for Team USA. The injuries he would suffer during the 2025 season made many question why he was cleared to play in the Olympics.

What happens with the Sixers going forward will depend on Embiid’s health. Philadelphia built their current team on the premise that he will be healthy going forward because if he’s not, the Sixers risk experiencing the same thing that happened this season.

If his injuries continue to pile up and/or he doesn’t return to form, that will also make it hard for the Sixers to trade him. For now, everyone should be cautiously optimistic unless the updates get worse. Still, Morey’s words on Embiid should make the Sixers’ fanbase collectively grind its teeth.
