Danny Rohl coaching career: Style of play, tactics, clubs, more to know about new Rangers manager

18 hours ago 3

Rangers' search for a new manager has flirted with being a shambles, but the Glasgow giants finally have a new man at the helm.

Russell Martin's ill-fated tenure was curtailed after just 17 games on October 17.

Rangers turned first to their ex-manager Steven Gerrard and former defender Kevin Muscat, but talks with both men broke down.

Now German tactician Rohl has signed an initial two-and-a-half-year contract at Ibrox.

The Gers are languishing in sixth position in the Scottish Premiership, having drawn six and won just one of their first eight matches this season. There is obvious scope for quick improvement under Rohl, but will the 36-year-old be up to the task?

Danny Rohl coaching career

Rohl began his coaching career on the staff at RB Leipzig and followed Ralph Hasenhuttl to work as his assistant at Southampton in 2018.

After just eight months at St Mary's Stadium, Rohl left to become Niko Kovac's analysis assistant at Bayern Munich in August 2019. He stayed on when Hansi Flick took charge to lead Bayern to Champions League glory in 2020.

When Flick moved on to take charge of the Germany national team in 2021, he took Rohl with him. Both men were dismissed in September 2023, leaving Rohl free to follow up his ambitions to manage in England. Sheffield Wednesday appointed him the following month.

What clubs has Danny Rohl managed?

Sheffield Wednesday

English Championship club Wednesday are Rohl's only previous managerial job.

Throughout his time with the South Yorkshire outfit, they were beset by financial problems and off-field turbulence. A 2-0 win over Sunderland on the final day of the 2023/24 season secured Wednesday's Championship survival.

In Rohl's only full season in charge in 2024/25, Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship. Overall, he was nominated for the division's manager of the month award three times.

Rohl was absent for Wednesday's first two weeks of preseason training for 2025/26 as their financial strife rumbled on. On July 29, it was announced he had left the club by mutual consent.

What are Danny Rohl's tactics and style of play?

As a product of the Red Bull school, Rohl likes his team to be quick in transition and is not averse to direct play.

However, his preference for a possession-based approach is also evident and shows Flick's influence.

At Wednesday, Rohl showed tactical flexibility, operating variously with three or four at the back. He represents a break from Martin's more dogmatic outlook.

Was Danny Rohl a player?

Rohl had a brief playing career in Germany's lower divisions as a defender.

He represented hometown club FSV Zwickau, FC Sachsen Leipzig II and FC Eilenburg.
