Dan Campbell opens up about Lions' 'unfortunate' decision to cut Terrion Arnold after arrest

The Detroit Lions didn't make many moves this offseason, hoping that Year 6 under Dan Campbell will bring even more improvement.

However, if there was one lingering topic from the Lions' summer, it was the release of cornerback Terrion Arnold. The 2024 first-round pick is no longer a member of the team after being released in June following his arrest on felony charges.

On Tuesday, Campbell addressed Arnold's legal situation and departure from the Lions for the first time.

On Tuesday, as Lions training camp gets underway, Campbell spoke about Arnold's June release from the team for the first time to reporters.

Campbell said the move was "unfortunate" knowing the player Arnold was becoming in Detroit, but necessary.

"It stinks. You never want to let go of a player -- especially somebody that you've been around for a while here and you drafted and all that, and it's unfortunate," Campbell said, per ESPN. "But we made the move we felt was best for us."

As for how the Lions plan to replace Arnold, for the time being, there are multiple candidates to start at cornerback opposite of D.J. Reader. Fifth-round rookie Keith Abney II, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Rock Ya-Sin and Khalil Dorsey are a few names who could be competing for the starting spot.

"We feel pretty good in that room with the competition and those guys between veterans, young guys and ability," Campbell said, per ESPN.

Why did Lions cut Terrion Arnold?

Arnold was released by the Lions in June, days after he turned himself in on an arrest warrant in Florida.

On June 24, Arnold turned himself in and was arrested and charged in connection with multiple incidents that occurred in early February 2026.

In February, multiple individuals were accused of kidnapping three other individuals in Tampa, Florida, and were arrested. The kidnapping was believed to be tied to an incident in the preceding days in which Arnold claimed he was robbed of more than $250,000 worth of items. Prior to Arnold's arrest, he denied any involvement in the kidnapping, while two others pleaded guilty to the charges.

Per ESPN, police said Arnold was the "primary conspirator" of the kidnapping incident, accused of "coordinating and directing the codefendants" to lure three men to an apartment where the assault occurred.

In June, Arnold was arrested and charged with felony kidnapping and robbery, with the possibility of being sentenced to life in prison. He faces four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery.

Now on house arrest after posting a $1 million bond, Arnold is awaiting trial on the charges.
