The Detroit Lions are taking the field a bit earlier than usual this year, as the team is set to play in the Hall of Fame Game on July 31 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
On Saturday, head coach Dan Campbell revealed that all rookies will play in the contest, and the plan is the same for the preseason.
"Dan Campbell said he expects to play all his rookies in the preseason, including the Hall of Fame game," Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network reported. "Said it's not set in stone, but that's the plan."
When it comes to playing the starters, we wouldn't expect to see any in the Hall of Fame Game, but it's possible some of them will get reps in later preseason contests, even though Campbell has been hesitant to play them in exhibition games in years past.
That's because the Lions have two new coordinators in John Morton and Kelvin Sheppard, and a new offensive line combination after the retirement of Frank Ragnow, and the departure of Kevin Zeitler in free agency.
But that will depend upon what the Lions see from their starters during training camp, and especially during joint practices. If the group shows enough, Detroit may opt to sit them in order to avoid possible injury.
