Dallas Mavericks to sign former All-Star to two-year deal

Free agency is just hours away from opening and the Dallas Mavericks have already come up with a notable signing.

According to Dallas Mavericks beat writer Mike Curtis, the Mavericks will sign D’Angelo Russell to a two-year deal, Curtis posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“The #Mavs are expected to come to an agreement with former All-Star guard D'Angelo Russell on a two-year contract, a person familiar with the process confirmed,” Curtis said.

Details of the deal are not yet confirmed.

Russell is entering his 10th season in the NBA. Russell was named as an All-Star in 2019 when playing for the Brooklyn Nets. Since then, he has bounced around the league with stops with the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and second stints with Los Angeles Lakers Nets. Russell was selected to the All-Rookie second team his rookie year with the Lakers.

Russell can provide Dallas with a boost off the bench. With the core of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis and now Cooper Flagg intact, Russell can be a solid role player in the Dallas offense.

In the 2024-2025 season with the Lakers and the Nets, Russell averaged 12.6 points and 5.1 assists in 58 games played. Of the 58 games he appeared in, he started 36 of them.

The Mavericks are coming off a season where they traded away superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis. After the trade, Dallas slid in the standings and finished 10th in the West.
