The Dallas Mavericks have named Ethan Casson as the team’s new president, the organization announced Tuesday. Casson, a veteran sports executive with more than 25 years of experience, will assume leadership of the Mavericks’ day-to-day business operations, reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer Rick Welts beginning August 11.

Casson, 51, most recently served as CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx, where he led business strategy and operations for nearly a decade, including community-focused initiatives and significant growth in team attendance. Before his time in Minnesota, Casson was chief operating officer for the San Francisco 49ers, where he played a key role in the development and naming rights for Levi’s Stadium.

“Being named president of the Dallas Mavericks is an extraordinary honor,” Casson said in a statement. “I’m deeply grateful to Rick and Patrick for their trust in me to help lead this iconic franchise—one poised not only to compete at the highest level on the court, but to deliver a world-class experience for the most passionate and loyal fans in the NBA.”

Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont emphasized that Casson’s appointment is part of the organization’s larger vision to become a top-tier professional sports franchise and enhance the game-day experience for fans, including future plans for a new arena and entertainment district in Dallas. Welts, who was hired as CEO earlier this year, will now focus on major strategic projects as Casson oversees daily operations.

Casson’s arrival comes during a period of transformation for the Mavericks, following a tumultuous offseason that included the trade of Luka Doncic and the drafting of Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. The team hopes Casson’s leadership will provide stability and help chart its course into a new era.

Casson’s official start date is set for August 11.
