At the trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks went through a massive change when they traded Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers. The new-look roster never had a chance to fully display its capabilities due to injuries. Being without key players was a big loss, but it did create an opportunity for some unlikely heroes to emerge on the roster.
After putting together a dominant debut for the Mavs, things quickly went sideways for Anthony Davis when he went down with injury. A few weeks later, Dallas was hit with even more devastating news that Kyrie Irving had suffered a torn ACL.
Between Doncic's departure and Irving's injury, the Mavericks were extremely thin in the backcourt to close out the 2025 season. Among those who saw a drastic increase in playing time because of this was guard Brandon Williams.
Williams, a former undrafted free agent, arrived in Dallas in 2023 following a brief stint with the Portland Trail Blazers. He didn't let the opportunity go to waste, as he shined for the shorthanded squad.
Across 11 appearances in March, Williams averaged 16.6 PPG and 4.5 APG on 54.1% shooting from the field. His best outing in this stretch came against the Memphis Grizzlies, where he notched a season-high 31 points to go along with six assists.
Earlier this week, clips from Williams' hot stretch last season surfaced on social media. As his highlights continued making the rounds, the Mavericks guard decided to re-post the video. He was excited to see his play pop up online, dubbing it a testament to how well he played for Dallas.
Know I’m doing something right when I get one of these🤷🏽♂️💪🏽 https://t.co/1o8srCOpM8

With Irving set to miss extended time in 2026, the 25-year-old has an opportunity to earn a rotation spot in training camp.
