My cat's weight suddenly shifted one day, she went from skinny to having a big belly, I'm worried that maybe something is wrong with her...or maybe This is a normal thing.

If this happened to us, we would be freaking out. Any slight change in our cats' appearance, purrsonality, or energy level may or may not set us into a small amount of panic. Are they okay? Do we need to change their diet? Are they sad? Do they need another sibling to play with? Are we feeding them enough? Too much?

Yes, this is literally what goes through our minds every time. No, it's not fun.

CAGE Hailsata- OP • 5d ago • Void To add another point she's been acting completely normal no changes no pain or anything. She's just been her normal self sleeping all day fighting with her brother it started to happen when we started putting them on hard food so maybe she's just getting fat because of the food.... I'm not sure when I'll be able to take her to the vet because my mom has to do that. I hope it soon cause I really hope she isn't sick or anything.

    • Unlucky_Rate_5652 5d ago . What do you mean by "one day"? Like literally skinny on Tuesday, fat on Wednesday, or is this over a period of a few weeks that corresponds to the change in diet? Precision in language is important here, i know my teenager would probably say something similar" overnight! when it was not literally overnight.

Turns out that OP is actually a minor, so she may in fact be using teenager speak. Remember the times when you were a teenager? Time was even more confusing then. You could sleep through basically an entire day, and whole weeks felt like lifetimes. So, "overnight" is a relative term for this hooman cat mom (is she still a cat mom if she's a kid? Too many questions).

Voila! She was pregnant the whole time.

Ok-Detective-8526 • • 1d ago Edited 1d ago • Please get her spayed as soon as possible, but it's often easier to neuter the male first! Male cats usually take 1-2 days to recover if they're healthy, while the female cat might need to nurse the kittens for 8-10 weeks. So, it's best to wait until she's finished nursing before getting her spayed. Talk to your vet or do some research, but I think waiting until she's done nursing is the best option.

Keep in mind that cats can get pregnant as soon as 1.5-2 WEEKS after giving birth. For everyone's safety, get the brother/father neutered as soon as possible. I'd also recommend getting the kittens checked by the vet and mentioning that their parents are siblings. This can help screen for any potential health problems in the future. Hope this helps!

inferno0904 2d ago. • Congratulations!!! I think she might birth one more later on...OP, if you want to raise them then it is well and good. If not, I will suggest them to stay with their mother 7-10 weeks. In that time, find responsible owners for them and provide them with everything they need. Also, if you don't want a pregnancy again, you should get your cats neutered.

clouddweller • 1d ago • Get the boy neutered ASAP. He may try to get the kittens pregnant. You don't want a kitten that's only 8 weeks old to get pregnant. I used to breed Norwegian forest cats and keeping the dad away from mama or babies was always a challenge.

paladinlonewonderer 1d ago . I understand it's not your fault & that you're a minor, so please KEEP THEM APART UNTIL ONE IS FIXED. They will keep breeding & it will only get worse. Please keep them separate!!!

Carrot Traditional739 1d ago. Eh now the damage is done, they are born and they all look extremely cute. Hopefully you guys can take care of them or give them away. I am not sure how common disease is with cats when there's involved but I hope these ones are healthy. Your mom can carry any lessons forward into the future about fixing cats. Mind, she has to fix this one now as well, before she gets pregnant again (which can happen!)

') what a good mama!! Look at those babies!

Architeuthis81 • 19h ago • I'm guessing daddy cat is orange... Getting the father neutered is a good first step. Have your mother do that as soon as possible so he doesn't get mommy cat pregnant AGAIN.

  • 25

The vet will advise you about the best time to get mommy cat spayed. Waiting until she's finished nursing sounds reasonable, but I'm not a vet, so I don't know. I have heard that kittens should be fixed when they are eight weeks old and/or weigh at least two pounds. Your vet can tell you which is right.

  • 26

Kittens should not be separated from their mother until they are between eight and twelve weeks old. Then your family may start looking into giving them away.
