Cubs urged to swing blockbuster trade for $66 million slugger to replace Matt Shaw

The Chicago Cubs could be in the market for a third baseman at the trade deadline. Matt Shaw could still be the team's future at the position, but he is not helping them win right now.

Shaw started the season in the big leagues but was sent down after some struggles. He has been called up again, but still needs to improve. The Cubs could lose Kyle Tucker in free agency, putting more emphasis on winning this season. FanSided's Zachary Rotman suggested the Cubs trade for Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"They hoped Matt Shaw would take their third base job and run with it, but that just hasn't happened," wrote Rotman. "In fact, he's been benched in each of the team's last two contests, making it evident that they're not satisfied with the play they've gotten at the hot corner. Unless they think Jon Berti is the answer (he isn't), the Cubs are going to make an addition to play third base. Suarez would be as good as it gets."

Suárez signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018. He is playing on a $15 million club option and will be a free agent after the season. If the Diamondbacks decide their season is lost, Suárez could be a valuable trade chip.

Shaw has slashed .199/.277/.282 on the season. His defense has been fine, but the Cubs' lead in the National League Central has shrunk to just one game. They need a boost, and Suárez could provide it.

Suárez was named an All-Star this season. He is slashing .246/.313/.550 with 29 home runs. Adding his bat to a lineup that features Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker could be huge. It may even help mask some of the team's pitching woes.
