Cubs trade idea would bring Seth Lugo to Chicago in deadline blockbuster

The Chicago Cubs have lost the lead in the National League Central. They seem set up for a tight race with the Milwaukee Brewers for the division title.

The Cubs starting rotation could use some upgrades if they want to make a deep postseason run. Shōta Imanaga and Matthew Boyd have been great, but the team needs more reliable starters. Justin Steele's season-ending elbow surgery has put them in a tough spot.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Cubs are reportedly making calls on available pitchers. FanSided's Aldo Soto tabbed Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals as an option for the team. Lugo has a $15 million player option for next season.

"Veteran right-hander Seth Lugo may not be the ace Cubs' fans want at the trade deadline, but the 35-year-old continues to be a durable and consistent starter," wrote Soto. "His production would certainly be welcomed in the starting rotation that is currently without a No. 5 starter. Colin Rea has pitched above his expectations, but the Cubs know better than to count on Rea to keep up his current pace."

Lugo was the Cy Young Award runner-up last season. This year, he has a 2.94 ERA in 18 starts. He could be a great addition alongside Imanaga and Boyd. However, he could end up being just a rental.

"However, Lugo's contract may work in favor of the Cubs and ultimately help drive the cost down," wrote Soto. "On the surface Lugo comes with control through 2026, but in reality the pitcher holds the decision. Lugo signed a three-year, $45 million contract entering the 2024 season, but the third year of his deal is a player option. If Lugo ends the year healthy and doesn't completely fall off a cliff, then he'll most likely opt-out and become a free agent."

After two stellar seasons, he could opt out of his deal. However, the Cubs should be getting Steele back next year, meaning even if they lose Lugo, it would not be the end of the world. He is in his 11th season, and is the type of player who could be cheap and make a huge impact.
