Cubs predicted to trade for Rockies pitcher with 3.62 ERA

The Chicago Cubs bullpen has the sixth-best ERA in baseball. However, there is no such thing as having too many good relievers in October. The Cubs could be looking to add to their already strong group.

Relievers are always a hot commodity at the trade deadline. While there are not many teams that are sure-fire sellers, the Colorado Rockies seem poised to be unloading talent.

Jake Bird is a player many contenders could inquire about. He is under club control through 2028 and has been great this season, despite playing a majority of his games at Coors Field. He has a 3.62 ERA in 40 outings. Surprisingly, his ERA is better at the notoriously hitter-friendly ballpark.

He has a 1.71 ERA at home this season. FanSided's Nick Villano predicted Bird would get traded this month, and that the Cubs would get him to help them win the National League Central.

"The relief pitcher probably isn’t going to many situations and becoming the closer, but relief pitching depth is something literally every team in the league could use right now. Every single playoff team would welcome Bird on their roster today," wrote Villano. "Because of the movement of relief pitchers, it’s hard to predict where Bird might land, but for the sake of this article, we’ll go with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubbies are leading their division going into the Break and are coming off a series win against the Yankees. We think they’ll be very active in upgrading their roster and keep the wins coming."

Bird is a young, controllable arm that could be a huge factor in October for any contender. Adding him to an already strong bullpen could help the Cubs greatly. Given their starting pitcher injuries, their bullpen may be relied on even more in the second half.
