The Chicago Cubs have had an explosive offseason, highlighted by their acquisitions of Alex Bregman and Edward Cabrera. However, there might be one more move that could be the cherry on top.
According to Fansided’s Robert Murray, that move is signing All-Star ace Zac Gallen. Gallen would fill out the Cubs’ rotation, give it more depth, and probably make it their best rotation in a while.
“The fit between Gallen and the Cubs is obvious. They have prioritized upgrading the pitching staff this winter, adding Edward Cabrera to the rotation and four different names to the bullpen. And it could be time to add another starter in Gallen. Adding Gallen to their current group would give Craig Counsell the best group of pitchers he’s had since he was in Milwaukee. The franchise is finally acting like a big-market team, and if they added Gallen, they’d assert themselves as the favorite in the National League Central,” Murray wrote.
This past season, Gallen posted a 13-15 record, a 4.83 ERA, 175 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.260 over 192 innings pitched. However, just two seasons ago, he pitched in 34 games, one of which was a shutout, obtained a record of 17-9, an ERA of 3.47, 220 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.119 in 210 innings pitched. If the Cubs can get that Gallen, they’d be practically unbeatable in their division.
He’d also come at a fair cost due to his down year this past season. He’s projected to receive a four-year, $74 million deal, and it could be even lower than that if his market doesn’t heat up soon.
Hopefully, the Cubs get in contact with his camp soon, and get this diamond in the rough on their team ASAP.
