Cubs named 'obvious' trade landing spot for 3.69 ERA Mets All-Star

It's no secret that the Chicago Cubs need starting rotation help at the trade deadline.

Injuries have really taken their toll on the pitching staff.

President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is tasked with finding at least an arm or two that can help the Cubs in the postseason.

One of the top starters who could be made available is Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets. The Mets have fallen out of the playoff race, and the right-hander is on an expiring contract.

The Athletic's Will Sammon wrote Tuesday that the Cubs are a very logical landing spot for the two-time All-Star.

"About one-third of the 30 teams, if not more, are potential contenders needing rotation help. The Chicago Cubs are desperate for it, making them an obvious team to watch for Peralta, who played six seasons under Chicago manager Craig Counsell in Milwaukee," Sammon wrote.

Peralta has had an up-and-down year but still profiles as a big-game pitcher. He has a 4.68 ERA in 19 starts this season.

Sammon detailed that Peralta recently started calling his own games on the PitchCom, instead of the catcher.

"Peralta determined he would go into his start Monday night against the Atlanta Braves with the intention of calling some of his own pitches using PitchCom for the first time this season," he added.

There will undoubtedly be other clubs calling the Mets about Peralta, but the Cubs standout for obvious reasons. There's also a familiarity with Counsell.

Several of their pitchers are injured, and there's no long-term commitment.
