Cubs might have a secret weapon for bullpen in postseason with All-Star veteran

The Chicago Cubs have undergone some major changes with their pitching staff at this year's deadline, adding a ton of talent in both the rotation and bullpen.

Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes, and Ryan Zeferjahn were the big additions, and with some other players coming back from injury, the Cubs' pitching staff should be in good shape come the postseason.

But, if they need some more help, USA Today's Bob Nightengale pointed out how veteran All-Star pitcher, Shelby Miller, coming off a lengthy injury recovery, could be a secret weapon for the Cubs this October.

"Veteran pitcher Shelby Miller has been impressing scouts watching him in the Arizona Complex League, and believe that he could help the Chicago Cubs in the bullpen if they have a need in September," Nightengale reports.

Miller underwent surgery last October for a torn right UCL and flexor tendon, and if he were to return this October, it'd be a year from his surgery, giving him enough time to come back.

He signed a $2.5 million contract in the offseason with the Cubs and has yet to pitch in the big leagues as he's recovered from this injury.

Miller is a former All-Star pitcher who's spent time on 10 different teams during his 13-year MLB career, including a very brief three-appearance stint with the Cubs in 2021.

He was most recently with the Milwaukee Brewers, posting a 5.59 ERA in 11 outings last season after posting a 1.98 ERA in 37 appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the Cubs potentially needing some more pitching help, adding Miller for the stretch run in October would be a huge boon.

Miller has a 4.04 ERA in his big league career and a 4.60 ERA in the postseason, including two scoreless innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023.

While the jury is still out on whether Miller will actually play for the Cubs this season, he is at least pitching well enough to be an option for the Cubs to consider.
