Cubs' Matthew Boyd got injured in a childish way, literally

1 hour ago 4

Matthew Boyd just returned from injury, but the Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher is hurt again.

This time, it happened in a way that is not going to make Cubs fans feel any better.

Boyd got hurt "sitting down to play with his kids," according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

The injury? A left meniscus issue that requires surgery, Rogers reported Wednesday.

A return timetable isn't yet known, Rogers added.

It doesn't get much more brutal than something like that for Boyd. It's one thing to get hurt in the middle of a pitching outing. It's another thing entirely to get hurt while hanging with the family.

The 35-year old made his first two starts of the season, then missed three weeks before returning on April 22.

He has made five starts overall, three since that injury absence, and now Boyd is going to miss more time.

His most recent outing was one of his best couple of the year -- 6.0 innings, allowing two runs while striking out five in a win on May 3.

For the season, Boyd has a 6.00 ERA through 24.0 innings, but he was trending in the right direction after being an All Star in 2025 with a 3.21 ERA in his first season with the Cubbies.

Now, it's not clear when Boyd may take the mound again for the Cubs, who have not had great injury luck this season. This one is especially unlucky.
