I don't know how the Chicago Cubs can look at their current roster, especially given how they've played over the past month or so, and be confident they have any chance of not only winning in the postseason but possibly even making the playoffs at this point.
The problem, once again, is that Jed Hoyer isn't expected to go out and do what's necessary to improve his roster on both sides of the baseball.
With all the injuries the Cubs have dealt with, there should have already been multiple moves made. Unfortunately for Cubs fans, and something they've grown accustomed to, that again hasn't been the case. Hoyer is now in a position where he needs to improve his team, and there's a lot of pressure on him to do so.
Despite that, it was recently reported that he isn't expected to make a move for someone like Tarik Skubal or Freddy Peralta.
“Still, Hoyer made it clear this week that it’s absurd for them to think about mortgaging the future for Skubal, Peralta or someone else unless they dramatically start playing better, losing 18 of their last 24 games,” Bob Nightengale wrote.
I hate that Hoyer tries to make it seem like if his team were playing better, he'd go after one of those guys.
The reality here is that he hasn't done that at all over the past few years, so history would suggest that he's just flat-out lying. He's not one of those general managers who's going to make a flashy move at the deadline, and I wish he would just come out and say that instead of making it seem like he would have if his team was healthy.
