The Chicago Cubs are leading the National League Central by 5 1/2 games going into play on Tuesday. They may need some pitching upgrades to hold their lead.
The Cubs' starters have produced a 3.87 ERA, which ranks 15th in baseball. They will be without Justin Steele for the rest of the season. They are currently without Shōta Imanaga, but he is expected to return at some point. The Cubs could use another reliable arm behind him if they want to run away with the NL Central.
There may not be too many starting pitchers available at the trade deadline. One of the better options available might be Andrew Heaney of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sports Illustrated's Matthew Postins suggested the Cubs call their division rivals and try to acquire Heaney.
"Heaney enters the week with a 3-5 record and a 3.33 ERA," wrote Postins. "If the season ended now, it would be the second-lowest single season ERA of his career. More importantly, he’s giving the Pirates’ bullpen length. He has pitched in at least five innings in 12 of 14 starts and has pitched into the seventh inning in six games."
"The Cubs need durability, length and versatility," Postins continued. "Heaney has all three. He may not be the only pitcher the Cubs get at the deadline. But he would be an important one come October if the Cubs are willing to make a deal."

Heaney won a World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023. He had a 4.22 ERA in the previous two seasons, but this year he looks like a different pitcher. His ERA is down. He is striking out fewer batters, but he has been effective. The Pirates are poised to be sellers, and Heaney could be a great addition for the Cubs.
