Cubs blockbuster trade pitch lands Eugenio Suárez in 3-player swap

Eugenio Suárez sure would look spiffy in a Chicago Cubs uniform.

The Cubs are once again tied for the best record in Major League Baseball, and their offense has been their most impressive trait all season. It's hard to say they need an upgrade, but if any position can be improved, it's third base.

Meanwile, Suárez leads the National League with 36 home runs (tied with Shohei Ohtani) and has a .924 OPS. Rookie Matt Shaw may still turn out to be a star, but he's a long way from approaching that kind of production.

So if the Cubs do want Suárez, what might it realistically take to pry him loose from the Arizona Diamondbacks? Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer attempted to answer that question on Wednesday.

Rymer proposed a hypothetical deal that would send Suárez to the Cubs for right-handed pitching prospects Jaxon Wiggins and Will Sanders.

"The Diamondbacks turning Suárez into two of the Cubs' top 10 prospects would look good on paper if nothing else. And both Wiggins and Sanders have some helium, with the former pitching well at Double-A and the latter doing the same at Triple-A," wrote Rymer.

"The question may be how willing the Cubs are to pay such a steep price for Suárez. Though they're clearly interested in him, their starting rotation needs arms a heck of a lot more than their lineup needs another bat."

Somebody is going to pay a premium price for Suárez, and it might as well be the Cubs. He fits their timeline perfectly, with Shaw struggling to establish himself this year and superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker also heading to free agency.

If Chicago is truly all-in, giving up Wiggins and Sanders shouldn't be too big an ask. That doesn't mean those two get a deal done for certain, but the logic is sound.
