The deadline for NFL teams to release their 53-man rosters is over, and now, every single team in the league knows who's going to be starting for them this season. It's an exciting time in the NFL, when players get their stripes and know they'll get time on the field. But, for others, it means getting less playing time or having to settle for the practice squad, at best.
The Dallas Cowboys made changes ahead of their 53-man roster, and one of the most glaring will really shape a young player's career. Of course, this is just the preliminary roster, and things change as the season progresses and players get injured, but the initial roster is still a significant look at where any team stands.
Cowboys' decision on young running back could shape his future
On Monday, ESPN released a feature with of the biggest roster moves for each NFL team. For Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, Todd Archer of ESPN focuses on the team waiving running back Jaydon Blue. He calls it their biggest roster move before the deadline.
The Cowboys snagged Blue as a fifth-round pick back in 2025.
"After a disappointing rookie season -- he was inactive for 12 games -- Blue was credited with a more mature approach by the coaches," Archer says in the piece. "But once training camp started, he was outplayed by Malik Davis."
He adds, "Blue's speed offered a different skill set than the rest of the position group, but the best he can do for the Cowboys at the moment is end up on the practice squad."
Archer adds that Davis "can be a core special teamer" this season. So, that's the running back situation, and the Cowboys' decision on Blue will may shape his future.
