Cowboys re-sign 6-foot-5 ex-Patriots QB two days after waiving him

The Dallas Cowboys are bringing a familiar face to begin September. 

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys are re-signing a 6-foot-5 former New England Patriots QB two days after surprisingly waiving him.

“Cowboys are re-signing QB Joe Milton to their practice squad,” Schefter reported on X/Twitter Wednesday. 

With Dak Prescott the obvious starting quarterback option for the Cowboys in 2026-27, the franchise had to choose between Milton and Sam Howell for the backup signal-caller role. 

Howell, who threw for 220 yards while tossing two touchdowns and one interception in the preseason, proved to be the most deserving candidate for the position, prompting the Cowboys to deliver inopportune news to Milton a week before the beginning of the regular season. 

The good news for Milton is that his stint with the Cowboys is far from finished, as his new practice squad deal will keep him in the mix for another campaign. 

The 26-year-old rocket launcher, who finished the preseason with 271 passing yards and two touchdowns, should be prepared for a call-up at all times, as unforeseen circumstances could compel the Cowboys to elevate him from the practice squad during the upcoming season.

While Milton didn’t receive positive roster news on Monday, it’s safe to say he’s in good spirits after Wednesday’s development.
