The Dallas Cowboys could use more depth in their cornerbacks room, and a former Las Vegas Raiders draft bust could be an option for them.
Drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, cornerback Damon Arnette did not pan out. Not only was his play on the field not good, but he routinely got in trouble off it.
Arnette was ultimately cut loose by Las Vegas in 2021, and while he was able to latch on briefly with the Kansas City Chiefs early in 2022, that didn't pan out, either, and he hasn't played a down of NFL football since his release from the Raiders.
Now, Arnette is trying to make a comeback. He is currently signed with the UFL's Houston Roughnecks and recently told Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com that things have changed drastically from his troubled days in the NFL.
“One, I had to take a look in the mirror,” Arnette said. “I had to make some serious life changes. And the main thing that I did was I invited back my support system, my foundation, and that’s probably something I will never let go of again because I see how dangerous it is to be trying to navigate in a new world, new environment, new situations with no experience. So, I definitely learn from that end."
With Arnette under contract in the UFL, he cannot sign with a team until the season ends. However, once his contract is up in June, it's conceivable to think he could be the next player to parlay his UFL career into an opportunity in the NFL.
One team that could have interest is the Dallas Cowboys, who were predicted as a landing spot for Arnette by Last Word on Sports' Anthony Palacios.
Even though the Dallas Cowboys got Kaiir Elam in a trade, they could use more cornerbacks for depth. Trevon Diggs is returning, but he’s on the hot seat this season since he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Arnette might not get a chance, but he could be a reliable backup. Owner Jerry Jones always finds a way to give players second chances, and Arnette could be one of them.
The Cowboys have a major question mark in their cornerbacks room with Trevon Diggs, who is working his way back from January knee surgery, which leaves his status for the start of the season up in the air.
The surgery also comes on the heels of Diggs tearing his ACL in 2023, although the two injuries are not related, ESPN's Todd Archer reported.
Nevertheless, the Cowboys could use more veteran depth in the secondary with a slew of inexperienced players in line to have a chance to start if Diggs isn't ready.
Arnette would check that box and could prove to be a diamond in the rough if he has truly gotten his life together.
