Cowboys predicted to part ways with Brian Schottenheimer for Alabama's 6-time championship guru

The Dallas Cowboys enter the season under a new head coach—a hire that many viewed as questionable by Jerry Jones. Brian Schottenheimer was brought in to lead the team, marking his first stint as a head coach. However, expectations are low, and CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin didn’t offer a glowing evaluation.

“Yes, Schottenheimer's name may be bigger than his resume, but this man first held a coordinator job way back in 2006; it's not like he's totally lacking in NFL chops. Are we sure there isn't a remote possibility he makes like, say, Doug Pederson -- another former NFC East hire who was overlooked by all except his own team's powerful front office -- and proves to be just the approachable leader Dallas needs?” Benjamin wrote.

If Jones decides to make another change after just one season, FS1’s Colin Cowherd believes the Cowboys might go all-in for a high-profile coach rumored to be eyeing a return to the sidelines.

“Got a little itch, and he’s not going to Jacksonville, but Brian Schottenheimer is over his skis, and Jerry Jones says, ‘I don’t want one of these NFL egos.’ He likes to hire guys where they feel like they owe him a little. And Jerry could go to Saban and go, ‘Okay, this Schottenheimer thing doesn’t work. Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts. I need a guy that knows college personnel,’” Cowherd said.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy also noted that someone close to Nick Saban believes the legendary coach could be open to a return.

Since McElroy’s comments went public, speculation has run wild. The possibility of Saban taking over as the next Cowboys head coach—highlighted by Cowherd—would be a massive move for the franchise. Dallas has the roster in place; all they need is the right leader. And if that leader turns out to be Saban, he’s more than qualified to take the reins.
