Cowboys predicted to dump $39 million starter if they hire Brian Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys will have roster turnover regardless of who they hire as their next head coach. However, if they choose Brian Schottenheimer, there could be some predictable moves.

According to NFL Network's Jane Slater, the Cowboys met with Schottenheimer for "more than five hours," during his second interview. He served as the team's offensive coordinator this season. FanSided's Cody Williams predicted that Brandin Cooks would not return to the Cowboys if Schottenheimer is hired.

"Dallas should be leaving no stone unturned to try and improve the receiver room this offseason, especially in the first three rounds of the draft," wrote Williams. "It's hard to imagine a world, though, where the Cowboys think Cooks is a viable part of that plan."

Cooks signed a two-year, $39 million extension with the Houston Texans before he was traded to the Cowboys. With the Cowboys, he has played in 26 games and has 946 receiving yards. He also has 11 touchdowns. He was not very productive in Schottenheimer's second year as the offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer has been the offensive coordinator for both of Cooks' years in Dallas and he has failed to match the production he was having in Houston.

"Albeit while missing time, Cooks finished the season with a measly 26 receptions for 259 yards and three touchdowns," wrote Williams. "That's not what you want from a guy who's supposed to be the No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb, especially when the flashes from Jalen Tolbert were far more impressive than what Cooks showed at any point when he was on the field."

Cooks is a free agent and has not had much success with Schottenheimer. Letting him walk could be a very realistic move if Schottenheimer nis hired as the new head coach.
