Cowboys predicted to cut ties with underwhelming 2023 draft pick

The Dallas Cowboys drafted two running backs and signed two in free agency. However, their additions could push one of their recent draft picks off the team.

The Cowboys had one of the worst rushing attacks in the league last season. Despite that, 2023 draft pick Deuce Vaughn was unable to build a role in the offense. The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency. They also drafted Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. USA Today's K.D. Drummond predicted that the Cowboys would cut or trade Vaughn.

Drummond predicted that the Cowboys would carry Williams, Blue and Hunter Luepke on their roster as "locks." He added that he thinks Mafah will make the team. However, with those four on the team, he predicted that Sanders would be on the practice squad.

Vaughn has logged just 40 rushing attempts in two years. He has 110 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He has also added 10 receptions for 58 yards. He was a sixth-round pick out of Kansas State.

The Cowboys were tied for the fewest runs of at least 20 yards in 2024. They had the sixth-fewest rushing yards in the league. If Vaughn was unable to carve out a role last season, the Cowboys' addition of four new running backs will not help his case. Williams and Sanders are established veterans looking to bounce back, while Blue and Mafah are high upside prospects the Cowboys spent draft capital on.

Vaughn could find a home with a new team, likely on a practice squad. However, if he puts together a strong preseason, he could find himself in a backup role on a needy team.
