George Pickens reported for mandatory minicamp and made it clear he has no plans to hold out, but his decision has only intensified questions about his future with the Cowboys.
Rather than pushing for a long-term extension, Pickens appears willing to play under the franchise tag. Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes that approach carries major financial risk.
Emmanuel Acho questions George Pickens' financial gamble
Pickens has repeatedly said his focus is on football, not contract negotiations. He also plans to attend training camp, giving Dallas stability heading into the season.
While that benefits the Cowboys, Acho argues it may not be the smartest business move for the receiver.
"It would be an absolutely foolish business decision of George Pickens to play on the franchise tag," Acho said on Speakeasy. "It would be a completely, fiscally, unwise decision to play on the franchise tag."
Acho acknowledged that Pickens may value happiness and team commitment, but he believes the financial downside is too great.
"Now, it might be a wise happiness decision... But from a pure fiscally responsible decision, it is dumb," Acho said.
His concern centers on injury risk. Without a long-term deal, Pickens could jeopardize future earnings if something goes wrong.
"Because if you go out there and play on the franchise tag for $27 [million]... and you get hurt, you are robbing yourself of tomorrow's fortune for the money you are making today," Acho added.
Pickens strengthened his contract case with a standout season, finishing with 1,452 receiving yards, third-most in the NFL.
Meanwhile, top receivers are earning more than $40 million annually, while Pickens is set to make $27.3 million on the tag.
"George Pickens would be being robbed in the imminent future $120 or so million by playing for $27 [million] instead of playing for $140 [million]," Acho said.
For now, Pickens appears comfortable with the risk, but the contract discussion is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
