Costco recalls Kirkland prosecco over risk bottle may shatter without warning: ‘Dispose immediately’

Costco has issued a safety alert over bottles of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene that may shatter without warning — even when left unopened.

The retailer warned members who bought the sparkling wine between April 25 and Aug. 26, 2025, in 11 Midwestern states that the product poses a glass explosion risk.

Customers in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin were told to dispose of any unopened bottles immediately.

“Do not open it. Dispose of the bottle immediately … to avoid risk from shattered glass,” Costco said in a letter to members.

The company instructed buyers to wrap the bottles in paper towels, seal them in a plastic bag and place them in the trash.

Unlike other recalls, the bottles are not to be returned to Costco stores.

Instead, members can claim a full refund by bringing the warning letter to their nearest location.

The alert applies only to item #1879870. Costco did not specify how many cases were affected.

Ethica Wines, which distributes the prosecco, is fielding consumer questions at [email protected] or (786) 810-7132, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” Costco said.

Meanwhile, Costco has officially begun enforcing a controversial new policy granting early shopping hours exclusively to Executive members.

The rule, which took effect on June 30 with a grace period, is now fully in force as of Aug. 31. Executive members, who pay $130 annually, can enter stores one hour earlier on weekdays and Sundays and 30 minutes earlier on Saturdays.

Gold Star and Business members, who pay $65, no longer have access to these extended hours.

Costco says the move rewards loyalty and aims to ease overcrowding, but the change has drawn criticism from workers and members.

Costco customers took to the social media platform Reddit to grip about the new policy, saying that a recent hiring freeze and reduced hours would make it more difficult to open earlier.

Others on Reddit compared the new policy to Sam’s Club’s long-standing tiered access, with club membership costing $50 per year while the Plus membership sets customers back $110 a year.

Despite backlash, Costco has made clear that enforcement is now strict, with no further flexibility.
