Police are poised to punish a group of adults who joined hundreds of children in a mass walkout demonstration against ICE and Donald Trump in Fresno County.

Clovis Police Department said it will file misdemeanor charges against two of those it had identified, with them hunting down multiple other conspirators.

More than 200 students walked out of class across the school district on Tuesday morning and marched to a major intersection with banners such as “colonizers can’t decide who’s illegal.”

Shocking video showed the adults – some wearing keffiyehs – appearing to direct the children with megaphones and signs before joining in with protest chants.

Clovis Police Department said: “During the protest, multiple adults were observed actively encouraging, organizing, and facilitating students leaving school without authorization.

“These actions are unacceptable. Adults who contribute to or promote truancy place minors at risk and interfere with their education.

“Clovis Police have identified two of the adults and are working to identify the others involved, with plans to file misdemeanor charges.”

The adults can be charged under California’s legal provision for assisting minors committing a crime, with the typical penalty a $1,000 fine or up to a year in jail.

But a parent of one of the students claimed the adults at the march were not encouraging them to protest, claiming it was organized by the children across social media.

She told the Fresno Bee: “To be clear, the children did this all on their own. There was no changing their minds about this. We were showing up for our children and for other children as well.

Another woman, who also refused to be identified, admitted she was at the protest but was only there to keep the kids company and help them cross the streets.

Protests have sprung up across the country since Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti died in separate incidents involving ICE agents in Minnesota.

Ten superintendents in Fresno County at the weekend send an open letter to parents urging them to stop their children from walking out of school to demonstrate.

Clovis Unified spokesman Kelly Avants said the school had been made aware of social media posts about the walkout and had cooperated with local police.
