This year's Rookie of the Year race is spearheaded by a pair of Duke alums making it big at the next level.
Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have enjoyed scorching starts to life in the NBA. The Mavericks and Hornets wings are undoubtedly the class of their class through one year, putting forth historic numbers while changing the cultures of their respective franchises.
Flagg, 18, entered the season with plenty of fanfare. Although he hasn't been able to compete in as many games as he would've hoped for prior to the start of the season, he is already starting to showcase his otherworldly potential. He kicked off April with a flourish, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points with a scoring outburst against the Magic. Flagg then followed it up with a 45-point explosion against the Lakers.
Knueppel, for all of his plaudits, hasn't quite been able to hit the heights of his former collegiate teammate. But he has gotten close, producing sizzling displays while anchoring Charlotte's playoff push.
So, just who gets the nod in this year's Rookie of the Year race? Here's what you need to know.

Flagg and Knueppel both enjoyed historic campaigns given their ages and lack of experience. Other metrics are worth noting if we want to get a full window into each player's candidacy.
Wins are certainly not the end-all, be all when determining individual accomplishments. But they can be an equalizing force should everything else remain level. Knueppel was the second-leading scorer on a team that won 44 games during the regular season. That dwarfs the Mavericks' paltry record mark by some margin, although Flagg can hardly be blamed for Dallas' struggles.

Cooper Flagg vs. Kon Knueppel: Efficiency
| Cooper Flagg | Stat | Kon Knueppel |
| 46/8% | FG% | 47.5% |
| 51.3% | 2-pt% | 54.8% |
| 29.5% | 3-pt% | 42.5% |

| 54.8% | TS% | 63.3% |
At first glance, it appears that Flagg and Knueppel saw the ball leap into the net with similar levels of efficiency. A closer examination of their numbers indicates that Knueppel was far and away the more productive shooter, however. The Hornets wing leads the league in three-pointers made and ranks eighth in three-point shooting. He immediately established himself as one of the sport's deadliest shooters as a first-year player. His effective field goal percentage reflects this budding reputation -- Knueppel's 60.1% mark is more than 10 percentage points better than Flagg's.
Simply, Knueppel is one of the NBA's most efficient performers. He takes the cake over Flagg, whose three-point stroke was shaky at times during his maiden season.

Cooper Flagg vs. Kon Knueppel: Defense
| Cooper Flagg | Stat | Kon Knueppel |
| 70 | Games | 81 |
| 1.2 | Steals per game | 0.7 |
| 0.9 | Blocks per game | 0.2 |
| 2.5 | Defensive win shares | 2.5 |
| .051 | Defensive win shares per 48 min. | .047 |
Flagg and Knueppel posted similar defensive metrics in their first seasons in the league, with Flagg recording a 114.7 Defensive Rating compared to Knueppel's 113; the lower number is better, in this case.
The Mavericks rookie slightly outperformed his opposite number in terms of defensive win shares per 48 minutes at .051. The difference is effectively cosmetic.
Still, Flagg's skillset goes beyond the stat sheet. He is a supremely-gifted defensive talent who has already established himself as an anchor for the Mavericks' defense. Knueppel is a solid defender. But he doesn't carry the All-Defensive potential that Flagg does. This category belongs to Flagg comfortably, even if the numbers don't quite reflect it.
Cooper Flagg vs. Kon Knueppel: Who's better?
The Flagg vs. Knueppel debate is, in same ways, a matter of preference. Both players have enjoyed glistening campaigns for their respective sides, with the statistical difference between them proving fairly negligible.
Flagg is probably an all-around better player than Knueppel at the moment. He has shown improved playmaking as the year has worn on and is far more accomplished defender than his former teammate. Knueppel, by comparison, is far more dangerous shooter than Flagg. His offensive game, while not featuring quite as many bells and whistles as his fellow Duke alum, does have some flourishes beyond his shooting prowess. Knueppel is sinking 54.8% of his two-point field goals, albeit on far fewer attempts than Flagg.
Knueppel looked to have the advantage heading into April. Flagg's scoring outbursts have potentially flipped the race in the other direction. It's hard to deny Flagg's exploits -- he's making history with each 40-point outing he piles up. At present, it seems he's the favorite for the prize. But if Flagg does win, it won't be unanimous.
