Connor McDavid makes clear statement on Oilers future

1 hour ago 3

Connor McDavid still hasn't won a Stanley Cup, and that seems likely to inform everything he does with his future.

Will he be staying with the Edmonton Oilers, and for how long? That's what NHL fans want to know.

The reality is that his contract says two more years in Edmonton are on the docket.

And for right now, McDavid isn't pushing back against that.

He had his exit interview with local media on Saturday, and he made a clear statement.

"I want to win and I want to win here in Edmonton," McDavid told reporters.

Easier said than done.

McDavid and the Oilers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday.

Each of the prior two seasons, the Oilers lost deep into the Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers.

"Maybe we took it for granted," McDavid said Saturday as far as this season's outcome was concerned.

The key going forward will be for the Oilers not to take McDavid for granted. He may be sticking around for now, but even a player as gifted for him isn't forever.

If Edmonton doesn't win a Cup with McDavid, it'll be regarded as a failure.
