Commanders rumor reveals why Romeo Doubs chose Patriots over Washington

The New England Patriots are signing Romeo Doubs to a four-year deal worth a max value of $80 million, and they had to beat out the Washington Commanders to land the young receiver.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Commanders were also pursuing Doubs, but he chose to play with quarterback Drake Maye in New England over Washington.

"The Washington Commanders were also in on Doubs. He picks Drake Maye and the Pats," Russini said.

Doubs is coming off one of the best seasons of his career and should establish himself as one of the top targets for Maye in Josh McDaniels' offense.

Missing out on Doubs does hurt a bit for Washington. Outside of Terry McLaurin, the Commanders lack high-end talent at receiver, and the team must add more playmakers for quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Doubs would've been a nice fit in Washington's offense as the No. 2 receiver opposite McLaurin. However, he is instead heading to New England to play with Maye, who will maximize his explosive skill set.

With Doubs off the market, the Commanders will need to find another way to address the receiver room, whether that be with the remaining free agents or the draft in April.
