Commanders predicted to sign Browns $18 million free agent to address dire need

The Washington Commanders made one of the more surprising moves this offseason when the team released center Tyler Biadasz.

The move was surprising for a few reasons. For starters, the Commanders didn't need the cap space, and Biadasz is no doubt a starting-caliber player who was quickly scooped up by the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.

As things stand now, the Commanders don't have a surefire starter at the position, and while they could look to the 2026 NFL draft to get one, that's not a guaranteed avenue by any stretch and the team should look to bring in veteran help.

Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport offers a strong solution. He predicts Washington will sign former Cleveland Browns center Ethan Pocic, who is still a free agent after playing out his three-year, $18 million contract.

"Ethan Pocic wouldn't be a long-term solution for the team — he'll turn 31 before the season starts. He has also missed multiple games in three of the past four seasons, including four a year ago," Davenport wrote.

"However, the 10th-year veteran is a capable NFL starter with 97 career starts under his belt and allowed just two sacks in 826 snaps last year with the Cleveland Browns," Davenport added.

Pocic isn't an elite center by any stretch, but he has proven to be a reliable starter during his career, which is exactly what the Commanders need.

In 2025, he gave up two sacks and 14 pressures, per Pro Football Focus. He also posted respectable grades of 62.2 in run-blocking and 63.2 in pass-blocking.

Compare that to the current projected starter, Nick Allegretti, who didn't surpass a 46.6 in any of his grades last season and gave up one sack and eight pressures in just 260 snaps.

Adding Pocic, who shouldn't cost more than $6 million annually on a new deal, would offer a one-year stopgap until the Commanders figure out a long-term solution.
