The Washington Commanders received the kind of news every team fears during training camp.
Veteran left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps during Saturday’s practice and is expected to undergo surgery, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Steve Wyche reported. The injury is expected to sideline the five-time Pro Bowler for at least a significant portion of the 2026 regular season, creating a major challenge for a Commanders team with playoff aspirations.
Tunsil sustained the injury during a one-on-one pass-rush drill against outside linebacker Odafe Oweh. Oweh initially worked upfield before cutting back inside, driving into Tunsil’s upper body. Moments later, Tunsil doubled over in pain, grabbing his right arm before trainers rushed to his aid.
After spending several minutes in the medical tent, Tunsil was escorted into the team facility for additional evaluation. The diagnosis confirmed Washington’s worst fears.
Commanders lose their most important lineman
The timeline for a torn triceps is significant. Recovery typically ranges from four to seven months, making it unlikely that Tunsil will return anytime soon and putting his availability for the latter part of the season in question.
The timing couldn’t be worse for the Commanders.
Washington made a significant investment in Tunsil to stabilize the left side of the offensive line and provide elite protection for franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. His experience, athleticism, and consistency made him one of the most important additions to a roster built to compete for an NFC title.
Now, offensive line coach and the front office must quickly identify a replacement. Whether that answer comes from within the roster or through a veteran free-agent signing remains to be seen, but replacing one of the NFL’s premier left tackles is no easy task.
The ripple effects extend beyond the offensive line. Tunsil’s absence places added pressure on the rest of the unit to protect Daniels while maintaining a balanced rushing attack. It also could force Washington to adjust its offensive approach early in the season.
Training camp injuries are an unfortunate reality in the NFL, but losing a player of Tunsil’s caliber is a devastating setback. The Commanders still possess one of the NFC’s most talented rosters, yet their path to contention has become considerably more difficult.
With the regular season fast approaching, Washington’s focus now shifts from preparing with its full lineup to finding a way to overcome the loss of one of its most valuable players.
