The San Francisco 49ers provided an update on wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on Monday and it's not good news for the Washington Commanders.
Of course, the Commanders have widely been connected to interest in Aiyuk given his connection to former college teammate Jayden Daniels and the team's need at receiver.
And while the expectation has been that the 49ers would simply cut Aiyuk, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the team is instead looking to trade him.
"49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said the team hopes the team can get something in return for WR Brandon Aiyuk," The Athletic's Dianna Russini relayed.
"I know we're in no rush to do that," Shanahan said of moving Aiyuk.
This is bad news for the Commanders for a few reasons.
For starters, the Commanders would much rather sign Aiyuk than give up draft capital for him, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding the veteran wideout, who hasn't played a snap in the NFL since 2024 due to a torn ACL.
In fact, ESPN's John Keim has reported the Commanders have zero interest in trading for him.
"Multiple team sources said Washington is well aware of Aiyuk's desire to play with Daniels," he reported. But Aiyuk remains under contract and the Commanders would be unlikely to trade for him or, when free, sign him to anything other than a one-year, prove-it deal."
Adding to that, the Commanders would like to have more certainty with Aiyuk sooner rather than later so they can continue planning out how they're going to attack what is a major position of need at wide receiver.
Unfortunately, as of right now, it doesn't look like that certainty is going to come anytime soon and the Aiyuk saga in San Francisco will continue indefinitely.
